Luach for Android

Ziporah Greve doesn’t stop surprising me.
I have already wrote a lot about wonderful php library for detecting Luach time.
Jewish calendar calculation in PHP

At this time, I found a wonderful application for Android, written by same Ziporah Greve, Luach for Android.

Here is my short review with some comments and suggestions.

The first page looks good.

Some bad things and suggestions:

  • But I don’t like the font and to narrow lines.  I would suggest to think over changing font to more clear.
  • Turning the phone in horizontal position, doesn’t change layout.  It would be definitely better if I could change calendar layout.
  • Options in the bottom are too small for my (middle sized man fingers ;) )

Now, about good points:

  • Settings button opens a possibility to jump to any date
  • changing to the nearest months is very simple – just tap-n-scroll with your finger to right or to left.

Click on a day opens current Zmanim, and Talmud reading section for that day.

Settings page opens a plenty of possibilities to customize settings according to your needs. On some of them, I would like to speak a little bit more.

City selection is very bad. There is a very good example how to select location: Hebrew Calendar allows to select location from build-in GPS receiver or manually via autocomplete. . As soon as Zmanim difference is determined by latitude and and longitude, I think it is more convenient to get such information from GPS. Currently in Luach app, you should select from the list of cities. if you want to look by first letters, you need to click on the button Show Keyboard.

Customization of Zmanim settings allows to do pretty much, so nobody would complain about missing some specific standard of daily Zmanim.

Events allow to save your notable dates – Anniversaries, Birthdays and Yartzeit dates. Just insert when this happened and every year it will show you note on proper Jewish calendar date.

Calculate your kid’s Bar/Bat-Mitzvah date.

Molad calculation for a definite year.

Jewish holidays in set civil year.

As i said in the beginning of this post, Luach for Android is a very good and useful application for an observing Jew. But there are some things to do in order make it better. I see forward to newer versions of Luach app.

I have version 1.1.0 of the Luach. The only problem I have with it is when I try to modify the values for a location. I get a Force Close and the application stops. I can add a location, but cannot modify it!! I’m using a Verizon Droid X.

Is there a later version that has this problem corrected? If so, can I just install it over the existing one?

    Thanks for your assistance.

      Richard,
I have also version 1.1.0 on my HTC Desire. I have no problem in adding and modification of location.
I installed it on Adnroid 2.2 and now it is working on updated version 2.2.9

As I see there is no access to the site http://www.ziporah-greve.net/android/. So, there is no possibility at this moment to ask for support from the developer.

Yartzeits are wrong. I entered a date from 1969 and it showed up incorrectly in 2011.

The database of cities is hard to edit.

The visual representation of the luach is impossible to read.

The WinMo version was a pleasure to use but this implementation is nowhere as useful.
