Software from http://www.tichnut.de/jewish/ (part 1)

Searching for various windows/linux/mobile programs, I found a really interesting resource http://www.tichnut.de/jewish.

Unfortunately, most of programs are not updated for several years (some for more than 4-5 years). But still, User can find something interesting there.

Linux
der tog far Linux program is intended to run on a Linux machine. Its last version 3.0e – last updated on 25th July 2005, 16:17 MEZ.
I tried to run it on my box (Ubuntu 9.10 and OpenSuse 11.1) result was all the same:

~/install/dertogfarlinux$ ./dertogfarlinux32
./dertogfarlinux32: error while loading shared libraries: libiconv.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Seems that libiconv on my box it too new for this program.

Another problem is License agreement:
The delivered software is protected by copyright laws.
The program may be copied free of charge and must not be sold.
The author is not liable for consequential, incidental or indirect damages of any kind
which arise out of the use of the software.

My conclusion is – this is a dead end of evolution.

Windows
Jewish calendar software for MS-Windows
Jewish Calendar (Version 12.5 – updated on 3 October 2008 ) made me to recall 90ies. In 1995 I got an old computer with 80286 type processor. In a year I got computer with 80486 processor and was able to install MS Windows 95 there. So, Jewish Calendar program in 2009 is like 80286 computer opposite 80486 with Windows 95.
Hebrew_Calendar

It is really strange to listen a sample of Jewish music on program startup. But this is not that big problem.
The biggest problem of this this application is absolutely unfriendly User Interface. I’d like to give an advice to developer to read an article from Spolsky “User Interface Design For Programmers“. As a starting point it would be great.
On other hand, this utility is really great for those, who’d like to publish customized calendar for family/community/whatever you want.
My conclusion – pretty good, but difficult to understand how to use.

To be continued…
