Facebook connection with WordPress blog
0 Comments | Posted by Moishe Beshkin in News, Reviews
I had a task to research possibilities to post from WordPress to Facebook wall.
It turned out to be a pretty difficult task. First, I tries a pretty big number of various plugins to WordPress. None of them worked for me properly due to carious reasons.
Then I researched the possibilities proposed by Facebook applications.
And now I have what to suggest:
RSS Graffitti on Facebook.
It goves a possibility to post to your own wall and to walls of your subscribed groups.
In my case KosherDev.com is posting to the wall of KosherDev.com group.

New bugfixes are available in this version:
1. A lot of Notice messages were removed from reporting.
2. End of Shabbat was set according to Rabbeinu Tam opinion (72 minutes after sunset for any latitude)
This is political decision for now. In future I plan to add proper selector to Advanced options page in order to select an opinion for time of Motzey Shabbat.
3. I found that every week custom settings were reset to default. I fixed this issue

Hebrew date plugin 2.0.3
0 Comments | Posted by Moishe Beshkin in News, Reviews
At last Mike “Mikeage” Miller shared his wonderful improved plugin for displaying Hebrew dates in WordPress.
It is my greatest pleasure to announce such event on Kosherdev.com.
When I started Kosherdev.com, I was looking for a plugin, which might display Hebrew dates instead or with Gregorian ones. Short surf over Google brought me to KosherJava.com site with preliminary version of this plugin. I installed this version, and then found that it doesn’t suit to my theme jQ. I changed some lines and only then found that Mike already done some improvements. I was too lazy to migrate to Mike’s version and I stayed with old on.
And at last new and improved version of Hebrew dates was released. KosherJava.com already announced it here.
I’d like to thank Mike for a wonderful work. Keep on going!
Say some words to Mike here.

Open Web and spiritual progress
0 Comments | Posted by bahaltener in Discussion
Recent events related to Google’s WebM release and their proprietary competitors’ threats for retaliation, led to multiple heated discussions regarding openness of the Web and whether open standards and Web freedom are essential for society.
It’s interesting to note what Jewish sources say about this issue. One might think that such modern technology subject probably can’t even appear in traditional sources, however it is not so. A closely related issue is extensively discussed from philosophical and mystical perspective in a known and esteemed source of Jewish thought – Seyfer HaBris written by Rabbi Pinchas Eliyohu of Vlino – a renowned Kabbalist and Jewish thinker of 18th century.
In a section called “Ahavas Re’im” (reference to the commandment of love for one’s neighbours) the author points out a Kabbalistic concept, that all humanity is essentially one big organism, interconnected in particular by verbal communication which is based on words and letters (which in modern technical terms can be called a global net of information channels). In order for this macrocosmic man to function properly, all organs should function in unison, which in translation to human relations possible only when there is love amongst neighbours. Reb Pinchos Eliyohu goes on to say, that such global network based on loving one’s neighbour is conductive for the spiritual revelation of ruach hakoydesh – i.e. mystical perception of higher reality:
Today, Internet serves as a global information network, connecting a major part of humanity with myriads of information channels. However one can figure out, that when these channels themselves serve as a tool for control and domination and as a method of fulfilling one’s greed – they don’t contribute to the goal which Seyfer HaBris outlines, because they are not conductive for ahavas re’im. Thus Open Web is actually an essential part of spiritual progress.

Zmanim Widget version 1.6.1
6 Comments | Posted by Moishe Beshkin in Zmanim widget
Following feature request from Ben, I added a possibility to select Hebrew labels.
To enable this feature, go to Settings -> Zmanim Widget and select ‘-hebrew’ version.
Translation is done partially, but in most of the places. Translation of other labels is not possible for now due to technical aspects. But hope to make all hebrew labels in nearest future.
Update: thanks to Ben, word Shabbos was translated incorrectly.

Zmanim Widget version 1.5.1
2 Comments | Posted by Moishe Beshkin in Zmanim widget
In this version, I fixed problem with not registering zmanim.js on Jquery.
Also added verification if Google map api key is applied or not. In case not – no map will be displayed and not error from Google will appear.
Playing with javascripts for Zmanim map, I found that there is a conflict of JQ theme and Ajax comments. Hope will fix it later.
Kosherjava, is it a problem, that WordPress uses jQuery version 1.3.4, but in your code it is said to use 1.4?
I found no issues on this case, maybe I haven’t looked well enough?
As usual,
